M-PowerHouse of Greater Pittsburgh addresses the educational, social and economic factors that become barriers to youth getting and staying engaged in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. M-PowerHouse seeks to curb the shortage of underserved and marginalized youth by connecting youth K thru 12 to nontraditional resources from artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, 3D printing, interactive tours and more. M-PowerHouse reached out to Open Lab which is a makerspace within the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh.

Open Lab is a makerspace within the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh.  In conjunction with Open Lab,  M-PowerHouse of Greater Pittsburgh will collaborate with schools to begin using two portable Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets to explore what it is like to be in outer space in an immersive, interactive way. The program will begin by introducing the participants to astronaut Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to go to space. Then the participants will break into smaller groups and experience 360-degree video and a couple of VR space programs. Pitt Open Lab will discuss what VR and 360-degree video are capable of and how they can be used to experience different places and give us a glimpse into other people’s lives. M-PowerHouse in partnership with Open Lab Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh is also tailoring specific program lessons for future events. The program will begin starting April 9th, 2019 at Pittsburgh Obama Academy of International Studies with many schools to follow.
